Why?

Learning and teaching

The concepts of 'language' and 'nationality' and 'other countries' are sometimes very difficult to grasp for children whose experience is limited to their immediate surroundings. The notion that life can be different from the way they experience it may grow almost imperceptibly as they begin to learn about other people and to experience new ways of expressing familiar ideas. Language learning, regardless of the level of skill the learner is capable of reaching, is the gateway not only to a new and wider world but also to a new understanding of one's own identity and to the possibility of growth and change. This new page will explore these issues in greater depth, examine their implications for language learning, and provide some support for educational programmes which attempt to provide a cultural context for the language being learned. I think that MFL has a major contribution to make to the 'citizenship' programme for all pupils, but especially for those with physical or learning difficulties for whom the subject may be their only window on the world.

Foreign Languages and Inclusion - Who? Why? What? and How?

This is an electronic version of an Article published in Support for Learning © 2005 NASEN in August 2005. It asks what foreign language learning is really for and what it has to offer pupils whose level of skill acquisition is likely to be modest.

Linking distant and familiar communities

This is a copy of a handout I used to show how resources in the local community might be used as context and as a starting point for foreign language learning.

Planning curriculum links

This is a proforma intended to prompt ideas about how individual topics from the language learning programme can be linked to the world outside the classroom, and how the world outside can be brought into the classroom.

If you found the above items useful you might like to know that some of the ideas have been further developed and now form the basis for Unit 6 of the Maximising Potential programme on the Modern Foreign Languages Environment website.
