CPD Follow-up

Thanks to all who attended the Supporting Dyslexic Learners event in Perth on Saturday 27th August. You were a great bunch and you provided us with some very encouraging evaluations. Thank you!

You will see that we are trying to develop the dyslexia page to provide on-going support for teachers of dyslexic learners. The links have now been checked and we think that they all work. If you have found other useful sites please let us know about them and we'll add them to the list.

For those of you who teach German and are interested in the Stile Trays, we learned from one of you on Saturday that a similar product, called Lük, is a popular study aid in Germany. It is used by students of all ages and abilities and for a whole range of subjects. The kit and ready made workbooks are sold in most bookstores in Germany. See http://www.luek.de

Unfortunately I don't have facilities - or skills - to offer the ICT training some of you asked for, but I'll post news of any relevant courses that come to my attention. Meantime, here's a link to the suite of web pages about interactive whiteboards on the Modern Languages Virtual Environment section of Learning and Teaching Scotland's website:

Some of you seemed concerned about the practice in your school of withdrawing dyslexic youngsters from modern languages at a very early stage and were looking for help in marshalling the arguments to contest this. At the end of this note you will find an downloadable extract taken from Europe, Language Learning and Special Educational Needs. It's a bit dated now - it was published by SOEID in 1997, in the time of 'languages for all' but before 'entitlement' - but perhaps it will help to spark some thoughts.

Exceptional withdrawal from modern language learning in mainstream schools
