Modern languages and inclusion - Why ?

Why teach a foreign language to children, or adults, who are already struggling to master their first language? Some thoughts on this.

What's happening in this field, nationally and internationally.

Continuing Professional Development

Information about the Working Together and Maximising Potential programmes and links to other information and opportunities.

Learning and teaching

A set of pages which looks at inclusive approaches to learning and teaching in the foreign language class. Currently focusing on barriers to learning, the importance of phonics, motivation & behaviour, active & multi-sensory learning, cross-curricular issues and the teaching of prerequisite skills. The L&T material has been revised and some of the items moved to a new page about managing learning in mixed ability classes.

Qualifications and assessment

Advice on teaching MFL at Access level in Scotland, including links to official documentation.

Resources

Some multi-sensory materials you may want to consider.

Linking Communities / Citizenship

By setting 'communication' within in the context of 'community' and by linking language learning to study of linguistic communities, including one's own, MFL can make a major contribution to Citizenship and other cross-curricular programmes.

Special Needs

The opening page focuses on international projects and on support in modern foreign languages for students with a range of special needs. Linked pages focusing on modern language learning for pupils on the autism spectrum and those with dyslexia are hosted by colleagues who have a professional interest in those areas. Being deaf myself, I have a special interest in modern language learning for pupils who are deaf. Find also pages on speech, language and communication difficulties visual impairment and Down's syndrome

English as an Additional or Foreign Language / Community Languages

Some links to sources of advice about teaching bilingual learners and about parenting bilingually. Some of the resources may be of interest to those teaching English as a second or foreign language and to those teaching community languages.

Workshops

Work in progress, please join in. Current work relates to planning support for dyslexic learners and others who find foreign language learning particularly challenging; examining the rationale for providing foreign language learning opportunities for all pupils; investigating writing as a possible barrier to learning; meeting learning needs; and the importance of making arrangements for consolidating new learning.
